SDG Cities aims to support 1000 cities in accelerating their achievement of SDGs and positively impact a billion lives by offering a systematic way to support cities in becoming sustainable and resilient. As per the New Urban Agenda, this will strengthen local institutions in key areas of data management, governance, planning, financing, and service delivery, as foundations for urban transformation.
However, drivers of sustainable urban development are lacking: these include multi-level, inclusive urban governance, effective legal frameworks, long-term and integrated urban and territorial planning, well-functioning municipal financing systems, and equitable infrastructure development.
